What is Dietary Fiber?

What is dietary fiber and why is it good for our health? Let’s dive in!

  • Dietary fiber can be found in most fruits, vegetables, whole-grains, and legumes. Fiber is not digested like carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. It passes through the body to assist in “clearing out your system.” Try including fiber in your diet if you struggle with an upset stomach!

  • There are two different types of fiber: Soluble and Insoluble.

    • Soluble Fiber: Dissolves in water which forms a “gel-like” substance.

    • Examples: Asparagus, peas, oats, apples, and carrots.

    • Insoluble Fiber: Promotes healthy movement of the digestive system.

    • Examples: Wheat-bran, potatoes, and cauliflower.

  • Health benefits of fiber include:

    • Assists in lowering cholesterol.

    • Promotes low blood sugar.

    • Provides a great source of energy for your mornings.

    • Reduces risk of cardiovascular disease.

    • Aids in weight management.

    • Promotes healthy bowel movements.
